A 47 year old man has been arrested in northern Italy after hijacking a school bus with 51 children on board, whose hands had been bound and setting it on fire.
The man had said he was acting in revenge protest for the scores of migrants who have drowned in the Mediterranean whilst trying to reach Europe from Libya.
The man, named Ousseynou Sy who is an Italian citizen of Senegalese origin, was the driver of the bus and responsible for transporting the 51 children from their school on the outskirts of Milan to a sporting event when he began making threats and brandishing a knife.
According to Police he said “no one will survive”
He also shouted “stop the deaths at sea, i will carry out a massacre”
The ordeal, which lasted for approximately 40 minutes, was brought to an end when Police smashed through windows of the bus to free the children on board before the vehicle was destroyed by flames after being doused in petrol by the kidnapper.
Francesco Greco, a prosecutor from Milan said “it was a miracle, it could have been a massacre”
“The carabinieri (police) were exceptional in blocking the bus and getting all the children out. They broke the windows and managed to get all 51 kids out.”
