European countries have just voted on the people they want to represent them in the European Parliament. A new Parliament means voting in a new President of the European Commission.
All European member states nominate a candidate for the post of European Commission President, that candidate must win by an overall majority, 50% +1 at the bare minimum. If that does not happen, member states will have to propose another candidate within a month.
A SOCIALIST To Lead The European Commission?
Dutchman Frans Timmermans has been tipped to become the new European Commission President according to reports coming in from Brussels.
In its Lisbon Congress on 8 December 2018, the Party of European Socialists (PES) endorsed the Commission’s First Vice-President Frans Timmermans (PvdA, Netherlands) as its lead candidate. His nomination came about through the Spitzenkandidaten process which you can read about HERE.
Timmermans was nominated by acclamation to bring an end to the so-called centre-right European People’s Party’s (EPP) domination of the three leading EU institutions.
If Frans Timmermans is elected as President, he will lead a Commission that will plan and propose European treaties, regulations and directives.
Essentially Frans Timmermans, a SOCIALIST leading the European Commission, will likely be in charge of the EU legislative initiative which you can read about HERE.
The PES (Party Of European Socialists) who nominated Frans Timmermans can be found HERE.
